Research & Development Director – Power Electronics & Energy Storage

Job ID #

31

The R&D Director will lead On.Energy’s global research and development program with a focus on power electronics, energy storage integration, and critical power infrastructure. Based in Houston, TX, this role requires deep expertise in power electronics, power systems, UPS architectures, and advanced grid-interactive controls. The Director will oversee lab validation, product prototyping, and collaboration with universities, suppliers, and customers to push the technical frontier of Always. On™ and related technologies.
Reports to the Chief Technology Officer and partners closely with Engineering, Software, and Commercial teams to accelerate product evolution from concept to deployment.
Key Responsibilities

  • Lead R&D Strategy: Define and execute the technical roadmap for Always. On™ and emerging power-electronics products.

  • Technology Development: Oversee design, modeling, and validation of inverter and BESS architectures, including grid-forming/grid-following control schemes.

  • Lab & Field Validation: Expand and supervise HIL/SIL and power-lab testing for high-power converters, transformers, and EMS integration.

  • Cross-Functional Leadership: Translate R&D into commercialized solutions that meet data center, utility, and industrial requirements.

  • External Partnerships: Engage with universities, suppliers, and standards bodies (IEEE, UL, ERCOT) to position On.Energy at the forefront of BESS/mission-critical R&D.

  • Team Building: Mentor engineers and scientists across power electronics, controls, and energy-storage disciplines.

  • IP & Publications: Support patent filings, technical whitepapers, and industry presentations to strengthen thought leadership and the IP portfolio.

Requirements

Education: Master’s or PhD in Electrical Engineering (required).

Experience: 10+ years in R&D leadership within power electronics, UPS, or BESS.

  • Expertise (Required):

    • Power Electronics (converter/inverter topologies, protection, controls).

    • IGBT and Silicon Carbide (SiC) MOSFET–based designs (gate-drive design, dv/dt/EMI management, thermal design, switching/transient behavior, reliability/derating).

  • Demonstrated proficiency in:

    • Medium-voltage distribution systems and UPS/double-conversion architectures.

    • Battery Energy Storage Systems (e.g., Li-ion/LFP) and BMS integration.

    • Grid-forming/grid-following strategies, droop control, LVRT/HVRT/ramp-rate compliance.

    • Modeling/simulation tools: PSCAD, MATLAB/Simulink, EMT models, HIL.

  • Proven track record of lab validation, prototyping, and technology transfer into commercial deployment.

  • Strong knowledge of UL, IEEE, NFPA, and ERCOT interconnection standards.

  • Excellent leadership, communication, and cross-disciplinary collaboration skills.

Preferred Attributes

  • History of building/managing technical teams and external R&D collaborations.

  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus.

  • Ability to travel up to 25% domestically and internationally.
